You do not need to use any soap when washing the bottom of the boat. you only need to clean the bottom of the boat beneath the waterline. this is the keel of the boat. look for the boot stripe, which is an unpainted border between the bottom paint and the topsides of the boat (which are the sides of the boat above the waterline).. The other piece of the bottom paint scenario that wasn't mentioned above is the need for 3-4 layers of properly applied barrier coating before the bottom paint goes on. this is not a step to be skipped. like bd said, gelcoat truly won't hold back water from eventually getting into the hull. good luck in your decision. mike. I'm on 3rd year of bottom paint, boat is in water and used year round, not sure why you wouldn't paint it. stuff still grows (very slowly) but much easier to remove and i only have to lightly power wash it twice a year and it's a breeze, no bleach, no anything. tryin to remember but i think i also picked up a knot or more in speed after painting..

boat bottom paint or not Trailerable boats are best off without bottom paint, but if that's not an option, consider a hybrid paint, which will hold up better throughout the constant launch and haul-out cycles (most hard paints can't tolerate being out of the water for extended lengths of time)..
